Black screen during logon and no progress dialogue with XenApp 6


During the logon process to a XenApp 6 server, the client progress dialogue will show briefly then disappear at various stages after "Applying user settings...", giving no feedback to the user about the logon process.

For a desktop that user will see the desktop with a black screen. For a seamless application, the user will see nothing between the progress dialogue disappearing and the application starting.


This is an issue with the following components:

- XenApp 6
- Citrix Online Plug-in 11.X
- Citrix Online Plug-in 12.0

Using the 10.X client does not show the issue:

There is currently a private hotfix that consists of a client and server component.

Hotfix for Client 12.0.3

Hotfix for XenApp 6

The client hotfix will be included in the 12.1 client, and the public XenApp 6 hotfix will be released at the same time.

Note: The Citrix Desktop Viewer toolbar (ShowDesktopViewer=On in WebInterface.conf/ConnectionBar=1 in launch.ica) is not supported on XenApp 6, only on XenDesktop implementations. Resolving black screens in Citrix Desktop Viewer is an enhancement that may be available in v13 of the Citrix Online Plug-in.

Workaround: To revert to the Windows 2008 R2 logon dialog, set the following registry entry as per CTX104893. This will work around the black screen issue.

REG ADD HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Citrix\Logon /v DisableStatus /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

Update: The following hotfix has been released to resolve the issue:

New Fixes in This Release
When the Windows logon takes a long time due to, for example, Active Directory authentication, a full-screen published desktop does not display a status indicator to provide status feedback. This can be confusing to users. This fix modifies the behavior of the status indicator so that the indicator remains visible until the authentication completes.
Note: To correct this issue in its entirety, you must install both a server hotfix (XA600W2K8R2X64007 or its replacement) and a plug-in hotfix (12.0.39 or its replacement) that contains Fix #235374.

Note: This hotfix will only resolve the issue for WFICA sessions. Citrix Desktop Viewer sessions (ShowDesktopViewer=On in WebInterface.conf/ConnectionBar=1 in launch.ica) will still have the issue.
