Active Directory Web Services reports errors with vCenter 4.1 on 2008 R2

Issue

When installing vCenter 4.1 on Windows Server 2008 R2, you may see the following error:

Log Name: Active Directory Web Services
Source: ADWS
Event ID: 1209
Task Category: ADWS Instance Events
Level: Warning
Description:
Active Directory Web Services encountered an error while reading the settings for the specified Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services instance.
Active Directory Web Services will retry this operation periodically. In the mean time, this instance will be ignored.

 Instance name: ADAM_VMwareVCMSDS

Resolution

This is due to an incorrect registry entry in the VMwareVCMSDS ADAM instance.

The following registry key may be configured as a REG_SZ with no value. Replace that with the following value:
C:\>REG ADD "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\ADAM_VMwareVCMSDS\Parameters" /V "Port SSL" /D 636 /T REG_DWORD /F

Restart the Active Directory Web Services service.

If the server does not have a valid SSL certificate installed, the following error will be seen on startup, and can be ignored:

Log Name: Active Directory Web Services
Source: ADWS
Event ID: 1400
Task Category: ADWS Certificate Events
Level: Warning
Description:
Active Directory Web Services could not find a server certificate with the specified certificate name. A certificate is required to use SSL/TLS connections.
To use SSL/TLS connections, verify that a valid server authentication certificate from a trusted Certificate Authority (CA) is installed on the machine.

 Certificate name: server.domain.com
